About Project Lifesaver

The Santa Barbara Sheriff's Department, along with the Alzheimer's Association and Lions Clubs International, has created an alliance called Project Lifesaver. This program is designed to help locate individuals who are at risk of wandering due to Alzheimer's, autism, or other related conditions. The program is administered by the Santa Barbara Sheriff’s Community Services Bureau and operated by Santa Barbara County Search and Rescue (SBCSAR).

How It Works

Project Lifesaver participants wear a personalized wristband or ankle bracelet that emits a unique radio frequency signal. If an individual goes missing, their caregiver notifies the local Project Lifesaver agency, which then dispatches a trained search and rescue team equipped with specialized tracking equipment.

The search team uses the radio frequency signal emitted by the individual's device to locate them quickly, reducing search times and minimizing the risk of injury or harm. With an average find time of less than 30 minutes, Project Lifesaver has proven to be highly effective in saving lives and bringing peace of mind to families and caregivers.

Benefits of Project Lifesaver

  • Increased safety and security for individuals at risk
  • Fast and efficient response in emergency situations
  • Reduced stress and anxiety for caregivers
  • Improved collaboration with law enforcement and first responders
  • Community education and outreach programs
